KISSING

What is kissing? Kissing according to the Oxford English Dictionary is an act of touching or caressing with the lips as a sign of love, sexual desire, or greeting. It is also important to know that the mouth is full of bacteria, and when two people kiss, they exchange between 10 million and 1 billion bacteria.

Kissing causes a chemical reaction in the brain, including a burst of the hormone oxytocin. It's often referred to as the “love hormone,” because it stirs up feelings of affection and attachment.

There are benefits as well as dangers to kissing.

BENEFITS OF KISSING

Kissing is not only fun, but it can also be healthy.

Here are a few known benefits of Kissing;

1.Kissing helps reduce blood pressure: The process of kissing makes the heart rate increase, It dilates the blood vessels and therefore increases blood flow thus the reduction of blood pressure. What better way than taking drugs often?

2.Kissing zaps cramps and headaches: Just like the aforementioned above, with a dilated blood vessel and reduced blood pressure, the stress levels are reduced, taking away the cortisol (stress hormone) causing the headache.

3.Kissing fights cavities: When kissing, there is a secretion of more saliva in the mouth. This is the mechanism that washes away the plaque on the teeth which leads to cavities.

4.Kissing amps up the happy hormones: The feel-good chemicals in the brain get percolating: serotonin, dopamine, oxytocin – things one can get from the rush of exercising.

5.Kissing burns a few calories: The body burns calories through oxygen deprivation. On average, one can expect to burn 2 to 3 calories per minute with simple kissing and 5 to 26 calories per minute engaging in passionate kissing.

6.Kissing can give a facelift (kind of): The mouth has 42 facial muscles, when those are engaged in kissing, they can be tightened and toned.

7.Kissing is a barometer for sexual compatibility: It is advisable to kiss your potential partner before getting naked and emotionally involved.

8.Kissing boosts self-esteem

DANGERS OF KISSING

1.It can expose you to nasty bacteria that make you feel miserable: Mouths can serve as a transmission route for germs because there is a close connection with the gastrointestinal and respiratory systems, and these are common sites of infections for germs.

2.It can lead to a sexually transmitted infection: Microbes that cause gonorrhea, syphilis, herpes, and HPV can be transmitted through saliva. Often asymptomatic, these could easily be passed between partners in acts as innocent as kissing.

3.It can lead to cold sores: Kissing can spread cold sores an infection caused by the herpes virus that's marked by fluid-filled blisters around the mouth. Since the virus can be contagious regardless of whether sores are visible, kissing someone who doesn't appear to be affected can still lead to a mouth infection.

3.It can cause cavities: Kissing could expose you to bacteria found in your partner's dental plaque and cavities. And that's regardless of whether a partner's breath seems minty fresh since anyone you kiss can pass an oral infection.

4.It can trigger a serious allergic reaction: One is more likely to experience an allergic reaction when their partner has just eaten food they can’t tolerate but the sensitivity depends on the severity of their allergy.
